Tracing a lost Child Trust Fund

Are you approaching, or have recently turned, 18 and want to know more about your Child Trust Fund (CTF), where it is held and the options available? Or are you a parent or guardian wanting to locate a Child Trust Fund to add to their savings pot for when they reach age 18?

CTFs were introduced by the Government for children born between 1st September 2002 and 2nd January 2011. They are long-term savings accounts launched to encourage saving on behalf of a child. All CTFs started with a Government contribution and family members and friends had the opportunity to gift money. <a href="/en-gb/sitecore/content/foresters/home/products/articles/what-is-a-ctf">Find out more about CTFs and their history here ></a>

With over 6.3 million Child Trust Fund vouchers given to parents, a quarter of these were allocated by HMRC, as they were not placed with a provider before the voucher expired.

HMRC believe that there are 700,000 Child Trust Funds that are lost – by this they mean that the person who is responsible for managing the Plan does not know who the provider is, or they have moved home and not informed the provider.

MyPlans

Got your National Insurance number? You can use this to see if your CTF is with us, by putting your details into our MyPlans account. If it is with us then you can manage your Plan online.

Activate your MyPlans account

We take the security of yours and your child’s personal details, personal and financial information very seriously. No matter how sophisticated our controls are, we can’t do it alone. Avoid sharing Plan details, or your MyPlans account via messages, images and/or videos online, including social media.

Find a CTF with the CTF Register

If your Child Trust Fund was not opened with any of the above, or you have not been able to find the current provider of your Child Trust Fund, you can locate it using the Child Trust Fund Register.

You need to be over 16 and have your National Insurance to hand. If you’re unsure about your National Insurance number, find out more here.

To find your Child Trust Fund you will have to complete/create your Government Gateway ID using your National Insurance number. This process can be a little long so make sure you have got the time.
